Fan was right
Needed to use the linear independence of characters anyway. Of course
you *could* prove this using the relationship between elementary
symmetric functions and sums of powers, but why would you do that?
The argument from 28827e4644997d974a3c08ef8649b926f70fe6fe that this
replaces was wrong, but since it never went online this doesn't matter.
