Definition 35.3.4. Let $R \to A$ be a ring map. We say a descent datum $(N, \varphi )$ is effective if there exists an $R$ -module $M$ and an isomorphism of descent data from $(M \otimes _ R A, can)$ to $(N, \varphi )$ .
