Definition 33.16.1. For any ring $R$ the dual numbers over $R$ is the $R$-algebra denoted $R[\epsilon ]$. As an $R$-module it is free with basis $1$, $\epsilon $ and the $R$-algebra structure comes from setting $\epsilon ^2 = 0$.
