Then the rule that to $Y' \to Y$ assigns $(f')^* : \mathop{\mathrm{CH}}\nolimits _ k(Y') \to \mathop{\mathrm{CH}}\nolimits _{k + r}(X')$ where $X' = X \times _ Y Y'$ is a bivariant class of degree $-r$.
